The new year is still in its infancy – but it’s already clear that it will bring exciting beard trends and stylish hairstyles. But what’s ‘in’ for 2021? Master barber Anthony reveals why length is a key factor and why the lumberjack look is a thing of the past.

Beard trends 2021: neat rather than wild

For years, the thick full beard was the must-have in the world of men’s fashion: models with lovingly cultivated facial hair were a staple on the covers of lifestyle magazines and were imitated countless times. Some even styled the lumberjack look with a scruffy beard as the epitome of masculinity. However, that could soon be a thing of the past, as Anthony Stölting, head of Eric:Barbier, explains. “The ‘Timberman style’ is over, because beards have become shorter again in recent years,” says Anthony. He should know: normally, dozens of customers flock to the three salons every day to have themselves and their beards styled by the professionals. But what should we look out for as we bid farewell to the lumberjack look? “Overall, beard trends are shifting back towards sharp, clean lines. A precise trim has become more important and is increasingly common,” explains the expert.

The courage to sport a moustache

The moustache is also on the rise: this style, also known as a ‘schnäuzer’, is practically a perennial favourite and is being tried out by men of every generation. “Interestingly, a particularly large number of young men are currently sporting a moustache. This beard trend has developed gradually over the last few years,” says Anthony. Whether as a thin pencil moustache or classically twirled with beard wax – the style is definitely an eye-catcher. The moustache can easily be combined with a three-day beard or a chin strap.

Trendy hairstyles: from the undercut to the ponytail

An interesting evolution in style is also currently taking place on the head. “Two years ago, short hairstyles with side undercuts were still the ultimate trend – now hair is getting longer again,” explains Anthony, “In 2021, we could see a revival of the ponytail.” As an intermediate step, the “man bun” – a masculine take on the bun – is a good option. To ensure the hair is optimally supported throughout the entire growth process, the master barber recommends a moisturising shampoo to prevent the scalp and hair from drying out.

Fashion trends 2021: Back to the 80s!

Alongside beard trends and stylish hairstyles, fashion is of course changing across the board – and this year is taking a step back to the 80s. “We’re currently experiencing a real fashion revival! Men and women are once again wearing looser-fitting clothes, right up to the oversized look,” says Anthony. So the era of skinny jeans is over for now: “Flared trousers are totally back in fashion; we saw that last year too.” So will Anthony soon be greeting his customers in flared trousers and with a moustache? “No, definitely not. The good thing about trends like this is that you don’t have to go along with everything. I don’t recommend the current beard trend to every customer either – we advise them and work together to find the style that best suits their face shape.
