A CHANGE OF PACE FOR THE EARS

With our podcast tips for real men, boredom is guaranteed to be a thing of the past: from sports talk, horsepower-fuelled discussions and business topics to entertaining duos and gripping crime cases, there’s always something new to listen to – here are our favourites!

Exercise for the mind

Admittedly, sport can sometimes fall by the wayside at the moment. Closed gyms and bad weather mean we spend a lot of time indoors, and exercise often gets neglected. The only solution is to exercise in the living room – with the right podcast to keep you company, you’ll stay motivated not to skip your workout. What could be better than “MoSports” with two-time Olympic hockey champion Moritz Fürste? The Hamburg native grills his guests on a wide variety of topics, with subjects ranging from “sex” to “coffee”. Special episodes are also highly recommended, such as the conversation with World Cup-winning footballer Christoph Kramer about nouveau riche 16-year-olds and why Mats Hummels is overrated in the FIFA video game.

Business on your mind

If you’re not fully occupied working from home, you can use our podcast tips to further your education and gain fresh inspiration on the side. In the “OMR Podcast”, exciting guests have their say in every episode. Founders, mavericks and digital natives chat with Philipp Westermeyer not only about digital marketing, but also about everything under the sun. Speaking of founders: are you fascinated by the hit TV show “The Lion’s Den”? Then you should tune in to “Startup DNA”. With entertaining overviews of topics and expert discussions, investor and entrepreneur Frank Thelen brings you up to speed on the latest in the scene. You can deepen your own financial knowledge, meanwhile, with the help of “Finanzrocker”. Daniel Korth explains everything from financial investments to pension insurance. You can find the basics in his second podcast, “Der Finanzwesir rockt”.

PS for your headphones

Just how practical is an electric car for everyday use? And what do hybrid drives really offer? Specialist editors answer these questions in the podcast “Auto Motor Sport erklärt” – particularly well-suited for keeping up to date with the latest trends in the automotive sector and impressing your mates with this knowledge at your next get-together. Lovers of classic road cruisers should tune in to “ClassicPodCars”. In under an hour, you’ll learn a lot about these rolling treasures, with each episode focusing on a different classic car. You’ll find relaxation in the “Christophorus” podcast, where each episode features a story read aloud from the Porsche customer magazine of the same name – with a “pictures-in-your-head guarantee”.

Talk, talk, talk

If you’ve got plenty of time, tune in to “Alles gesagt?”. ZEITmagazin editor-in-chief Christian Amend and ZEIT Online editor-in-chief Jochen Wegner put their guests through their paces – it never lasts less than two hours. YouTuber “Rezo” even managed over eight hours before he gave the agreed code word that brings the programme to a close. That’s the whole point: here, the interviewee decides when the episode is over. Actors, politicians, chefs and many more have already made an appearance – and have even turned the question-and-answer game on its head, as did ‘Känguru-Chroniken’ author Marc-Uwe Kling. ‘Hotel Matze’ is no slouch either: here, alongside politicians, other public figures such as Dunja Hayali and Moses Pelham regularly take the floor to philosophise about society.

For a good laugh

Jan Böhmermann and Olli Schulz can talk for hours: with a special quarantine schedule, the two presenters are currently even going on air daily, releasing a new episode of “Fest & Flauschig” every 24 hours. With their sometimes rambling discussions on politics, trends and everyday madness, Schulz and Böhmermann have almost achieved legendary status and naturally cannot be left out of our podcast recommendations. Felix Lobrecht and Tommi Schmitt have established themselves as an alternative. “Gemischtes Hack” is based on the same principles but has a cruder tone – which goes down well; according to Spotify, the format was the most listened-to podcast of 2019. A relatively new addition is Klaas Heufer-Umlauf, who, once a week with “Baywatch Berlin”, helps you switch off your brain and give your laugh muscles a workout.

Forbidden good

Fancy tuning in to one of Germany’s biggest media scandals? Stern is capitalising on its spectacular blunder from the 1980s – the purchase of Adolf Hitler’s alleged diaries – with an excellent podcast that delves deeper into the fraud than ever before. “Faking Hitler” tells the story of how the fraudster Conny Fischer duped journalist Gerd Heidemann and, for a brief moment, even the entire nation. And once you’ve been hooked by the allure of the forbidden, you should tune in to “ZEIT:Verbrechen”. Editor-in-chief Sabine Rückert has already uncovered two miscarriages of justice through her reporting and here gives a gripping account of her most spectacular criminal cases as a court reporter.
