Kopfsache - Hair styling with wax

That’s the look!
A quick touch-up with wax and you’re ready to start the day – or are you? Time and again, I hear from our customers that their hairstyle doesn’t sit or look quite as the man in the mirror had imagined. Often, small mistakes are made during the morning routine that prevent the best possible result. It’s high time to take a closer look at the correct use and optimal preparation.
Before you start styling your hair with wax, you should first find the right product for your look and hair type. For light, summery styles like the pompadour (see left) and for fine hair, I always recommend soft wax, which doesn’t weigh the strands down too much. For thicker or styled-up hair, I recommend using wax with a stronger hold, such as Eric:Barbier ‘Creme Wax Medium’ or ‘Strong’. When buying, always make sure that the products are not only good for the appearance but also for the health of your hair and scalp. In our own product range, we use only natural and nourishing ingredients, such as beeswax, which provide moisture.
Less is more
Once you’ve made your choice, it’s all about applying it correctly. Many men dry their hair with a towel after their morning shower and then try to achieve the desired look using too much hair wax – with limited success. Because here too, preparation is half the battle. Wet hair should be shaped into the desired style using a comb and hairdryer before the wax comes into play. Once the hairstyle is as desired, rub a hazelnut-sized amount between your palms for four to five seconds until the mixture warms up and reaches the perfect consistency. Then distribute it evenly through the hair with your fingers, ensuring no residue remains visible.
I always advise our customers to start with just a small amount. Too much wax can quickly make the hair stick together, look damp and ruin the natural look. If it isn’t enough after the first application, simply readjust carefully. This way, you can create all sorts of hairstyles – from a neat side parting to a mohawk, anything is possible. To give very fine hair in particular a stronger hold, you can treat it with sea salt spray before styling to further increase its strength. The salt crystals coat the individual strands, making them noticeably thicker and more resilient.
Pump up the volume
Speaking of fine hair: an extra dose of volume often helps here to unlock its full potential. To give the strands more body, apply a little wax to the roots with your fingertips and style as described. You can then perfect the look with a comb and precise styling. It’s all the more frustrating when the weather decides to play up again – rain, wind or high humidity can quickly undo all your hard work. In such conditions, a little hairspray will protect your hairstyle. When spraying, make sure to keep a distance of at least 30 centimetres so that the spray settles freely on the hair and doesn’t make it sticky.
Exceptions prove the rule
Of course, there are different approaches depending on the style you’re aiming for. For example, if you prefer a dandy wet look, apply a small amount directly to wet hair. Once it’s evenly distributed, use a comb to refine the style before the strands lie flat against the scalp as they dry.
As you can see, styling your hair with wax isn’t always the same. On your next visit, I’ll be happy to explain how best to use our products.
Yours, Anthony
